My poem for books
I had to write, memorize, and perform a monologue about books for drama class a while ago. I really enjoyed it, so I thought I would post it here. It's a poem about the deep impact that books have had on my life.
To read a book, is to leave this world
And enter another
What drives us to these other worlds?
Why do we read books of fear and pain?
Why not retreat to good feelings and places?
Some might say
They read for fun and love the thrill of horror
Some read to educate
And others steer clear of the sad books, the scary ones
And opt for pleasant themes,
So why do I read what I read?
I love dark books.
The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton revolutionized my life.
Before, tragedies were shunned by my mind
I opted for the lighter books,
But then I entered The Outsiders
And I loved the dark
And the tears
And I never turned back.
I sought out books to make me feel
Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers
The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
And more S. E. Hinton
I was enchanted by the power.
Words. Simple words on a page can evoke such strong emotion.
The amazement, the power, was part of my attraction,
But there must be more to it.
Why am I called to the darkness?
Now I think I know why.
Curiosity, however morbid, is the driving force.
I want to understand.
I want empathy.
I want to look into the eyes of the broken and see the light.
For there is always light.
In the saddest of books hope shines through.
Books help me understand other people
People I may never meet,
But if I do, I’ll be ready
Ready to learn who they are and never judge.
Because books have taught me that every character has a perspective.
I read to enjoy.
I read to learn.
But I also read to care.
